Struggles with arranging footage

Through our editing Kat and I have found it hard to properly arrange our footage. We both know what we want, and it happens to be the same thing, but arranging the clips in different orders can change how the audience view the whole two minute opening all together. Our annitial ideas we to have a non leinear structure (something we're still trying to archive) but we have changed our footage around three times, after completing each editing attempt fully before changing it again. 

This has caused us to find it hard to keep within our time limit because of trying to find the perfect way to structure our footage.

When we first started to film and order everything in the way we wanted to through the editing, we both followed the storyline/story board, basing the script off our original ideas, and thought that that arrangement was the best way.

Kat and I looked st the way we had placed things and it looked more like a trailer than the opening two minutes of a film (we also had no film idents at the time) and it looked like we were trying to fit the whole film into the two minutes. It was clear that we had to film some new footage and cut some of the original stuff out because it was too long. We hadn't made it clear how Cara was in a bed, injured, and the music being played underneath everything was also copywrited.

Things needed to be changed, when we changed things for the second time we had filmed more footage, more memories between Cara and Daniel and the car crash scene. We needed to move everything about, adding the idents, new clips, voice over and new un-branded music.
Kat and I completed this, almost looking perfect, until we realised that we had moved everything around so much, the only clips that made the two minute opening non linear were the memories, we'd  put everything else to the end of the clip.

Once realising that that we had made a clip that was more linear than we'd hoped we changed it around again, starting the film with sad music instead of up best music, putting the clip of Cara laying on the floor after the crash first, then playing the crash after... and so forth with the original lots of film. Using two bits of music in our film, and changing the beginning around and the music around has changed or film allot from what we'd thought it'd be, and the original 'put together'.
Overall we are glad that we have trialled and failed and made ourselves better, we have progressed and improved in not only our clip but knowing how to film and edit. We both weren't highly experienced but we have developed and become better. '

in this vlog bot Kat and I talk about the changes we have made to our film when we were editing. We mentioned two points, one being the about adding more scenes and the other, the layout of the two minute clip.

Kat talks about why we have had to film other clips to add to our two minute opening because it makes the style more linear and blocky. I talk about how we have struggled to place our clips in an order that would make sense, using flash forwards-sneak peaks to the future- and changing clips to black and white.

This title is my Ident, I designed it to look like this because it involved both mine and Kats first initials, along with a front and backwards shape of a 'K'. I wanted the ident to be personal because it is appearing at the beginning of my film.

This is the title we are using for our film. it is appearing after the first 1:45 which indicates that the film is properly starting in a more linear form.

This is my second ident, it appears after the first one, and carry's on through to the first shot in the film. This is used to integrate the titles and the film together

When finding music for my film I was searching on You Tube. While I was editing my film I was working it around the music I had chosen. Once I had finished it I realised that the music was copywrited and therefor I had to use something else.
I researched and found multiple uncopywrited clips of music and downloaded a few to see if it would work with my film. While still editing, using other added clips and new ones I had shot for my film it began to become difficult to work it around the music.
While I was finishing off editing the second to last version of my film, I had used two different bits of music, one for the beginning and another as it would change half way through. I trialled and tested but with the split music (that didn't really work together) I realised that the two bits of music didn't help support my film very well and made it seem as if it was jagged and quickly put together.

I had decided to completely change my film about, using different clips myself and my friend (a college media student) shot when we were together. I wanted to express more of the emotional ride Cara was going on and to play on the non linear structure.
By the end of the editing I decided to use three bits of music from the website linked down bellow, which allows online media people to download non copywrited music. I decided to use an early, sad bit of music at the beginning of my piece because it helps set the scene of Cara being emotional and recovering from Daniel and the car crash (however it is interpreted). I then under layered Ancient Chinese drums which echoed and brought a level of depth was into the film. It also builds up the tension which tells the audience that something is going to happen to cause the ending of something. After the first 1:45 mins of the film it cuts and shows the title of the film, another piece of music then taking over which helps to indicate the change in time as it is uplifting which tell the audience that Cara is happy and she hasn't met the boy that will change everything, this sustain the continuity of a nonlinear structure.

This is a clip showing what our film looks like currently. We are still in the process of editing, using all of the time we are given to make the film our best. Currently the film is in a stage of change, both myself and Kat have realised that our original plan of a non linear structure has not been accomplished to the bes that it can, with recent new footage we are going to change some of the clips around to create a less rigid structure.
Our end goal is to start the film off with Cara injured, then cutting to her in her room, or with daniel, this will be foreshadowing the future and will draw in the interest of the audience. They will know that something bad will happen to Cara but would want to know how it led to that (like Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet).

Kat and I designed our film identity through the base idea of our names. With C & K productions bellow our symbol helps identify our film as our own, creating our own film directing, filming and editing company. Having an enlarged symbol to represent the film identity catches the audiences attention, informing them of the company name, while having a unique symbol helps separate our ident from other companies. Another reason to explain the last point mentioned, having a unique symbol stands out, and if it appears again, the audience can relate the two (or more films) together to have an overall judgement of the company.

Using a film identity at the beginning of our film helps promote our film with our company, it trade marks the film with the company and gives our brand a unique image.

We made our film identity through photoshop, using different layers to edit each piece before putting them all together to create the final piece. We looked through the internet to gather different ideas of what out ident pic will look lie, settling on one that has two mirroring 'K' 's facing one another. We believe that it helps represents us and our film in a positive way and reflects what type of genre our film is (swirly writing can help to connote romance and love, rather than something blocky and jagged).
Using photoshop, we edited each layer, starting with a black background, editing the symbol (making sure everything was black and white to give a sharp and professional look), taking that layer off the screen we then went through loads of different types of font for the 'C & K productions'. We settled on one that has an 'indi' look which is a softer and more relaxed appearance which helps to portray our romance genre. Once we chose this font we put both of the layers together and exported into a JPEG, wo we can use it in our film.

All of the scenes following after the car accident have been made to look dirtier and murkier, this helps with portraying changes in time.  The clips showing Cara and Daniel walking is from the past, not affected by the future, but appear murky because everything was so perfect then, and not in the future. This is showing the opposite emotions because the key events that happening in the film have already been seen.
Not only does the fade make everything more grundgy but it softens the original colours, along with decreasing the vibrance which makes the shots look lighter/ paler (foreshadowing the future events) which contradicts with the effect of the fade.

Within filiming Kat and I decided to deliberately edit this clip to make it look 'grinder', this affect was also used in the clip where Cara is being hit by the car. 

This deliberate change in footage is to portray the the 'memory' or 'flash forwards in time' is fuzzy and hard to remember. The original footage (the bottom picture) was clear but adding the effect has created more of a texture weighing the footage. I also believe that it has a metaphorical meaning. Cara is quite possibly in critical pain, and so with the use of 'grain' it helps emphasis her stuggle in recovering and remembering what happened to her.

The use of black and white helps to show a time change or a difference in time, whether this is a flash to the tire of something Cara is in currently or a memory, our storyline is non linear and we with that it creates all of these different meanings for what is actually happening.

Audience rating

The audience rating for our film 'Remember Me' is an 18, this is because the film will include violence and possible bad language. There are violent scenes and it could affect the viewers with the graphic detail shown, it may also be a rateable situation to some viewers and if it is to any of the younger audience it is advised that they don't watch the film.
Our film will also feature arguments that may feature bad language or expressive language. We do not advise that we should have a younger audience to then watch out film because we do not support the ideas of the influence that the film may have on them.
We are also aiming our film for our age range and above and not the younger audience which is another reason why we want our film to be an 18.
For the demographic status our film would be a  C1 or C2 because these are the type of people who would want to deliberately go to the cinema to watch our film.

I am aiming my film towards an older audience because of the content featured in the film.
Adults should be free to choose their own entertainment. Exceptions are most likely in the following areas: • where the material is in breach of the criminal law, or has been created through the commission of a criminal offence 
• where material or treatment appears to us to risk harm to individuals or, through their behaviour, to society. For example, the detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts, or of illegal drug use, which may cause harm to public health or morals.

In my film I've always wanted to address relationships and the psychological toll it can take on anyone depending on the circumstances and so I show that throughout the first two minutes and the rest of the film. It involves allot of actions that could affect the individuals watching and therefor I wouldn't want to affect less matured people.
I would create cross media and connect with Facebook to help promote the film. I'd choose this platform because the audience that Facebook provide range between the age I am promoting my film towards. Facebook is also a global live platform that connects allot of people together, this will allow more people from any age to see the trailer along with sharing it for more people to see.
Another platform I would connect with is Google because its an international global Internet server that every website works through it. Google would make an advert from my film (the trailer) and attach it at the bottom of web pages for people who open up those websites will see the trailer.
I would contact Google to attach the film onto websites that are more relevant to the film and websites that our age range would visit to attract the right audience to out film.

We decided to film the memories 1 and 2 separate to the rest of the film because it was a different section within our film. Within the editing, we make the top clip a little shorter due to the amount of time we are given for the opening of our film, along with changing both of theses clips in to black and white. The change in colour helps signify a change in time, even though the location (Cara's bedroom) is the same for other memories and actions. 

Black and White also helps separate dark and light colours from one another, making the clips look crisper and clearer, helping with  supporting the meanings of the clips, memories. Before and after each of these memory clips, the clips transition through white which helps separate them from the other clips which are showing a different time period. Not only does the transition help to emphasise the time difference between the clips, but so does the colour, which means that hoping that the audience will understand the change is easily achieved.

Within shoot three, we filmed Cara walking to school and arriving at school, Scenes 5 and 6. The shots ranged from standing still and hand held which helps show a range of diversity shots making everything more interesting.
These short clips interlink with Daniels to show the two going to school, the overall atmosphere of the whole thing is sad/negative, sadness portrayed through the acknowledgment that there is going to be a bad ending if the two meet, and the overplayed music 'River flows in you', although any happiness shown is through the innocence of the two characters.

Shoot two consisted of the main shots with Daniel at his house, long with the kiss between Daniel and Cara. The picture on the right shows the outfit that Daniel wore in the filming, which consisted on a smart casual jacket, designer top and dark trousers and boots. The overall look is showing a confident and smart young man which helps show the characters personality.










Within the first clip (the top one) it is showing a memory between the couple. Within the editing we cut the beginning of this clip to make it shorter and to flow more, then changing it from colour to Black and White. The change is colour helps portray that this memory is happening in a different time frame from the other clips which are in colour. Having a change in colour creates a time change and depth in the film, which supports the non-linear structure Kat and I are working along.

The second clip is showing one of the angles I filmed showing Callum (playing Daniel) leaving his house. Filming this from two different angles helps with continuity and allows the film to flow more. This was filmed using a tripod which helps secure a more balanced shot, I would recommend the use of a tripod for shots like this.

The third clip is showing Callum getting ready in his bedroom, this shot is face on, clearly showing Callum getting ready in the morning. If we filmed this from a different angle it wold portray something different (disorganisation and because Callum isnt centred in the middle of the shot, a feeling of discomfort). Filming from straight on, Callum roughly being in the middle of the shot helps portray a simple life/lifestyle, if closely observed the shot isn't quite straight on, it is facing more to the right which gives a more 'open to the audience' atmosphere.

Within our first shooting we covered scenes 1, 2, and scence 4 shot 1. Kat and I chose to do these shots because they are all based in Adderbury., which is one of our three location places to film in, the other places being Bodicote and Middleton Cheney. Bellow I have attached the main clips filmed from each of the scenes we filmed (does not include the smaller moved shots taken. One shot from each scene).
